For five decades California Lutheran University (CLU) has been a pillar institution in Thousand Oaks. This Fall, CLU will mark its 50th Anniversary with a series of special events spanning the next 18 months. Next spring, the University will host a CLU Community Day Celebration and a series of other special events.
California Lutheran College was incorporated on August 4, 1959, five years before Thousand Oaks officially became a city. With land donated by Conejo Valley rancher Richard Pederson, the son of Norwegian pioneers, the dream of an institution of higher learning became a reality. The ranch's chicken coops were converted into classrooms, and dormitories, and in September 1961, 330 students began classes. The curriculum expanded to include graduate programs in 1970, and the college's name was changed to California Lutheran University in 1986. Today, the university has 3,550 students in its College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, and School of Business.
Ties between CLU and the City of Thousand Oaks have remained strong through the years. The campus has provided countless cultural and educational activities for residents.
Dedicated to educating leaders who are committed to service and justice, CLU has sent its students and staff into Thousand Oaks to provide a range of services from feeding the homeless to advising business owners. In honor of its 50th anniversary, CLU has committed to participating in 50 service projects to better our community.
